Mapping Speed Loss Zone by Zone Across a Driver Face

We stopped asking players how fast they swing and started asking where they hit it. Two seasons of strike tape later, the pattern is clear enough to fit from.

Every driver session on Wirt Road opens the same way. Before a shaft comes off the rack, we spray the face, hand you your own driver, and let you hit twelve shots without any coaching at all. The tape tells us more in four minutes than a conversation about swing speed does in twenty.

Once we had a couple of hundred of those tape sheets filed alongside launch numbers, a question became answerable that we could previously only guess at: what does each specific miss actually cost, in ball speed, for the player making it?

The Grid We Use

We divide the face into nine cells — three horizontally, three vertically — using a printed grid overlay rather than eyeballing the tape. Centre is defined as the geometric middle of the impact area, not the middle of the face, because on most modern heads those are not the same spot and the difference matters by half a ball width.

Ball speed for every shot is recorded next to its cell. The figures below are medians drawn from just under nine hundred logged strikes across roughly forty different driver heads. They are expressed as a percentage of the speed that same player produced from the centre cell on the same day with the same club, which strips out swing speed entirely.

Vertical Beats Horizontal, and It Is Not Close

The first thing this makes obvious is that up and down costs far more than left and right. Moving a ball width toward the toe is nearly free. Moving the same distance downward is not. A player who is scattered across the horizontal middle band of the face is in decent shape; a player who is scattered vertically is losing real yardage on half his tee shots.

That runs against how most players talk about their driving. Almost nobody walks in and says their strike is low. They say they hit it off the heel, or off the toe, because those are the misses that produce a curve you can see from the tee box. The low strike produces a shot that merely goes shorter, and shorter is much harder to notice than crooked.

A ball width low is worth roughly four times what a ball width toward the toe is worth. Players spend their practice time on the cheap miss because it is the visible one.

The High Toe Is Not a Miss

Look at the high toe row again. Ninety-eight per cent of centre speed, plus gear effect pulling the ball back toward the fairway, plus a spin reduction from the upper portion of the face. For a lot of players, that cell produces the longest drive of the session, and it happens often enough that fitting the head to it rather than away from it is defensible.

We have built drivers around a high toe pattern several times. It usually means a slightly flatter lie angle, sometimes a marginally shorter shaft to bring the strike inward, and a head with more of its mass toward the heel to keep the centre of gravity closer to the pattern. None of that is exotic. It just requires knowing the pattern exists first.

Low Heel Is Where the Money Goes

Seven per cent of ball speed is somewhere between fifteen and twenty-five yards of carry for most players. And the low heel strike does not come alone — it typically arrives with an open path, a steep angle of attack and a shaft that is too long for the player to control at the bottom of the swing.

The most common single fix we write on a driver record is half an inch off the shaft. It moves the whole pattern inward and upward on the face, which is worth more than any head change we could sell you. It also costs about twelve dollars, which is why almost nobody at a retail counter suggests it.

The pattern is the fitting input. Clubhead speed tells us what is possible. The tape tells us what is happening. When the two disagree, the tape wins, and the fitting gets built around the second number rather than the first.

Why Retention Is a Head Property Too

Two heads at the same price point can differ by more than a full percentage point in how much speed they hold onto in the low heel cell. That difference is not printed anywhere. It comes out of face thickness distribution and where the manufacturer chose to put the mass, and the only way to find it is to hit both heads with the same shaft on the same day.

We keep a small set of reference heads specifically for this. A player who reliably misses low heel gets sent through those first, and we pick the one that gives the most back on his actual pattern rather than the one with the best centre number. Centre speed is almost identical across modern heads anyway. Retention is where they still differ.

What This Means for Your Session

If you book a driver fitting here, expect the first block of it to look like nothing is happening. You will hit your own club, we will spray it, and we will not offer an opinion until the grid is populated. That is not theatre. Everything after it depends on knowing which cell your bad shots live in, and there is no way to know that from watching a ball flight.
