Driver Fitting: Holding Speed Off the Centre
Nobody plays golf from the middle of the face. The driver that gains you the most yardage over a season is the one that gives back the least on the strikes you actually produce, which is why this session begins with a face map rather than a speed reading.
The First Twenty Minutes Are Spray Paint
We put foot spray on your current driver face and you hit ten balls. The pattern that comes back is the single most useful piece of information in the session, and it takes almost no time to collect.
A player whose pattern sits low on the face needs different help from one who scatters across the toe, even if their swing speeds are identical. The low-strike player is usually losing more to spin than to speed. The toe-scatter player is often playing a driver that is simply too long for them to control.
Speed Retention Beats Peak Speed
Every launch monitor will happily record your best swing of the afternoon. That number tells you what your ceiling is on a range mat in an air-conditioned bay. It does not tell you what happens on the fourteenth tee in July after a poor tee shot on thirteen.
What we track instead is how much ball speed survives when contact moves away from centre. Some head and shaft combinations hold nearly all of it across a wide zone; others fall off sharply half an inch out. On a strike pattern like yours, that difference is worth more real yardage than a two mile-per-hour gain in clubhead speed.
Spin Is a Consequence, Not a Setting
Spin numbers get discussed as though they were a dial. They are a result of loft delivered, strike location and angle of attack acting together. Moving a weight to the back of a head or adding half a degree of loft will change spin, but so will striking the ball a quarter inch higher on the face, and the second effect is often larger.
So we work on strike first. Once contact settles into a repeatable zone, loft and weighting decisions become straightforward, and the record ends up with numbers that hold when you leave the bay.
Length, Weight and What You Can Actually Swing
Shaft weight sweeps come next, in reasonably large steps to start with. Most players show a clear preference band and it is frequently heavier than the one they walked in expecting, because light shafts feel fast and heavier ones deliver the head more repeatably.
Playing length is set with the same logic. We are looking for the longest club you can still centre, which is a different question from the longest club you can swing.
What Ends Up on Your Sheet
- Head model, loft setting and any movable weight positions
- Shaft model, weight, flex and the exact tip and butt trim in inches
- Playing length measured to the sole, and swingweight after grip
- Butt frequency in cycles per minute
- Grip model, core size and the number of tape wraps
- The as-built column, filled in after the epoxy cured
