Leading Edge Height and Why September Turf Punishes It
Nobody's short game collapses in late summer because their swing changed. It collapses because the ground stopped hiding a wedge that was always sitting too high.
Around Houston, the calendar does something specific to Bermuda. Through June the fairways are holding water, the grass is thick under the ball, and there is a cushion beneath every lie. By the second half of September that cushion has gone. The ball sits on the ground rather than above it, and the same fifty-yard pitch that was routine in early summer starts running across greens.
Every year we get a run of calls about this in September, and almost none of them are swing problems. The measurement that explains them is leading edge height.
What We Actually Measure
Sole the wedge on a flat plate at the loft and lie it will be played at, then measure the vertical distance from the plate to the bottom of the leading edge. That is static leading edge height. It is a direct consequence of bounce angle and sole width working together, and it tells you how far off the ground the sharp part of the club sits when the sole is resting.
Then we do it again with the shaft leaned forward by the amount that player actually delivers — not a textbook figure, the number off the monitor from his own pitch shots. Leaning the shaft forward de-lofts the club and raises the leading edge further. That second number is the one that predicts thin shots.

Eight millimetres is roughly the radius of a golf ball's lower quarter. When the leading edge is that high and the ground offers no cushion, the club contacts the ball above its equator no matter how well the player swings. That is a skulled wedge, and it is arithmetic.
A thin wedge in September is usually the correct swing meeting a leading edge that was never going to reach the bottom of the ball.
Bounce Angle on Its Own Tells You Very Little
Two wedges stamped at ten degrees can sit at meaningfully different heights because sole width and camber differ. A wide sole with high bounce props the club up substantially; a narrow sole with the same stamped bounce sits far closer to the ground.
This is why we stopped fitting wedges from the stamped number years ago. The number describes an angle between two reference points on the sole. It does not describe how the club sits, and how the club sits is what the ball experiences.
Relief Changes Everything and Costs Nothing to Test
Grinding material away from the heel, the toe or the trailing edge lowers the leading edge without changing the nominal bounce, because it moves where the sole makes contact with the ground. That is why a heel-relieved wedge can be opened at address without the leading edge rising the way a full sole would.
We keep blank heads on the shelf for this. When the measured numbers say a player needs less effective height but the same bounce for soft conditions, the answer is usually relief work on our own bench rather than a different stamped bounce, and it is reversible in the sense that we can start conservative and take more.
Angle of Attack Belongs in the Calculation
A steep attack drives the leading edge downward into the turf, which means a high-sitting sole is partly forgiven because the club is arriving from above. A shallow, sweeping attack does the opposite — the sole slides along the surface and the leading edge stays high the whole way through.
That is why the same wedge suits two players so differently. We take attack angle from the monitor on partial shots specifically, not full swings, because the partial swing is where the wedge earns its place and it is delivered differently from a full one by most players.
The Firm Lie Test
There is a strip of natural turf set flush with our mats, and in late summer we deliberately move wedge testing onto the tightest section of it. A wedge that works on a forgiving mat and fails on a tight lie is not a wedge worth buying, and there is no substitute for hitting the actual shot from the actual condition.
What usually happens is a player arrives with three wedges, discovers that one of them cannot be played off a tight lie at all, and leaves having replaced only that one. We would rather sell one wedge that fixes the problem than four that look like a matched set.
What Goes on the Sheet
Static leading edge height, effective height at the player's own shaft lean, stamped bounce, sole width, and a note on any relief work we performed. Five numbers per wedge. When somebody calls in two years asking whether we can replicate a wedge that got stolen out of a cart, those five numbers make the answer yes.
