Sole Width, Camber, and the Habit of Digging
Every iron audit here starts with a divot survey rather than a launch number. The shape of the hole your club leaves in the ground says more than the ball flight above it.
There is a piece of advice that circulates in golf shops and it is close enough to true to survive: if you dig, get a wider sole. It is close enough that a player will occasionally be helped by following it. It is also wrong often enough that we stopped using it years ago.
Sole width is one of three variables that decide how a head behaves entering the ground, and it is not always the dominant one. The other two are where the camber peaks and what has been done to the trailing edge, and neither of them is printed on anything.
Camber Is Not Bounce
Camber is the curvature of the sole from front to back, and it determines where along the width the club is actually touching the ground. A sole with the peak of its camber set forward presents contact near the leading edge and enters the turf easily. A sole with the peak set back rides on its rear portion, which resists penetration and encourages the head to skip.
Two irons with identical published sole widths and identical bounce angles behave completely differently if that peak sits in different places. We have taken measurements off heads that read the same on paper and produce divots you would not believe came from the same delivery.

The third row is the interesting one. It is the widest sole of the three and it was the worst performer for this particular player, because the delivery was steep enough that a rear-riding sole bounced the leading edge up into the ball. Wider did not mean more forgiving. It meant a different failure.
What a Divot Tells Us
Before anything else in an iron session we survey divots on the turf strip. Four things get written down.
- Depth at the deepest point, in a rough scale from scuff to two knuckles
- Where the deep point sits — under the ball, ahead of it, or behind it
- Whether the divot is deeper at the toe end or the heel end
- Whether it exits cleanly or the club stops and tears
A divot that is deepest behind the ball says the low point is early and no sole geometry will save it. A divot deeper at one end says the lie angle is wrong. A divot that tears rather than exits says the trailing edge is catching. Those are three different problems with three different answers, and none of them are solved by "get a wider sole".
The launch monitor tells you what happened after impact. The divot tells you what happened during it, and during it is where the club selection is decided.
Trailing Edge Relief Is the Underrated Fix
Rounding or grinding the rear edge of the sole lets the head exit the turf rather than dragging it, which matters enormously for a steep player on soft ground. It is common on wedges and strangely rare on irons.
Where a set allows it, we will relieve the trailing edge on the short and middle irons for a player whose survey shows tearing exits. It changes almost nothing about how the club looks at address and it changes a great deal about how it feels through Bermuda that has been watered the night before.
Bermuda Is Its Own Case
Warm-season grass with a dense mat layer behaves differently from the cool-season fairways most equipment testing is done on. The mat grabs a sole that is riding flat and it resists a trailing edge that is square. A club that reads well in a magazine test in the upper Midwest can be a genuinely poor fit for a course on the west side of Houston.
This is why we test on real turf rather than exclusively on mats, and why the turf strip beside the bays is maintained to the condition the local courses are actually in. A mat forgives everything. It is a fine place to check a launch number and a useless place to make a sole decision.
Lie Angle Comes After, Not Before
One sequencing note. We set turf interaction first and confirm lie angle second, which is the opposite of how many fittings run. The reason is that a club which is fighting the ground produces a delivery the player is compensating for, and lie angle measured against a compensated delivery is a measurement of the compensation.
Get the sole behaving, let the player make three or four natural swings, and only then put him on the board with tape on the sole. The number that comes out of that sequence holds up on the course. The number that comes out of the other sequence frequently does not.
What Ends Up on the Record
Sole width, an approximate camber peak position, any relief work performed, the divot survey notes, and the lie angle measured afterwards. Two years later when a player wants a matching gap wedge, that page tells us exactly which geometry to look for rather than which model name to search.
